What is an estate planning council?

Probably the best resource on the origin and purpose of an estate planning council is the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC).  On the "NAEPC History" page, the NAEPC describes the importance of estate planning to the public and the team approach as the superior means to deliver effective estate planning.  On the same page, the NAEPC cites the six purposes of the estate planning council movement from "A Guide for Forming Life Insurance - Trust and Estate Planning Councils," which was produced by local councils between 1937 and 1959:

  1. Enabling life underwriters, trust officers, attorneys, and accountants to become better acquainted;

  2. Developing mutual trust and understanding;

  3. Learning to cooperate -- confident that there is no competition among the groups;

  4. Learning more about each others’ business;

  5. Knowing experts in each others' fields and having the confidence and trust to call on them for their services;

  6. Giving, through this cooperation and study, much improved service to clients.

What is The Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast, Inc. (the "EPCEC")?

Essentially, the EPCEC is a local estate planning council that exists to promote professionalism and development of individuals involved in an estate planning discipline along the Emerald Coast.  The EPCEC differs from some estate planning councils in that it includes charitable planning professionals because (a) there is no local, active planned giving council in the area and (b) charitable planning is viewed as an integral part of estate planning by members of the EPCEC.  For additional information on the EPCEC, please view the "About Us" page or contact one of the EPCEC's leaders listed on the "Member Directory" page.

Why should an Emerald Coast professional join the EPCEC?

The EPCEC exists to deliver value to its members.  Some of the primary benefits of joining the EPCEC include:

  1. Proximity: The EPCEC meets in Destin, which is central to most Emerald Coast locations, and will move its informal meetings around the area;

  2. Education: The EPCEC offers leading national and regional speakers, group access to Leimberg Information Services (see the "Resources" page), and other shared resources;

  3. Networking: The EPCEC includes Emerald Coast leaders from all of the estate planning disciplines;

  4. Discussion of Planning Techniques and Topics: The EPCEC's informal meetings allow members to interact and discuss estate planning techniques, topics, and articles and other resources;

  5. Meals: The EPCEC's formal meetings include dinner, which represents most of the annual membership fee; and

  6. Development for Each Discipline: As a result of the EPCEC's formal and informal meetings, the EPCEC hopes that all members will develop together and serve clients and each other more effectively.
