History and Overview
The Estate
Planning Council of the Emerald Coast, Inc. ("EPCEC")
was formed in August 2004 by Jason E.
Havens of Destin-based Havens & Miller, P.L.L.C; Deanna Muldowney
and Pamela Weathers, both CPAs of Destin-based Carr, Riggs & Ingram,
LLC; and David E. Barton, CLU of the Destin office of the
Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. The EPCEC includes
members from all estate planning disciplines: attorneys, CPAs,
life insurance professionals, trust officers, charitable
planning professionals, and financial professionals. The
EPCEC's members include estate planning professionals from
Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, and Gulf counties. The EPCEC is
based in Destin, Florida, which has become the central "gem"
of the Emerald Coast.

Affiliation
The EPCEC is affiliated with the
National Association
of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC), which is “a national
organization of professional estate planners and affiliated Estate
Planning Councils focused on establishing and monitoring the highest
professional and educational standards.” The EPCEC is a sister
council of the Estate Planning Council of Northwest Florida,
Inc., which meets in Gulf Breeze, Florida on the third Tuesday
of each odd month (January, March, May, July, September, and
November) at the
Bay Beach
Inn.

Formal
Meetings
The
EPCEC meets for dinner and a featured guest speaker on a
bi-monthly basis on the last Tuesday evening of each odd month
(January, March, May, July, September, and November) at the
Destin Chamber of Commerce. (These months were chosen so
as not to conflict with the meetings of the EPCEC's sister chapter.)
These dinner meetings represent the EPCEC's "formal" meetings.
The first/inaugural meeting of the EPCEC
was held on Thursday,
December 16, 2004, and featured
internationally-known tax attorney
Jonathan G. Blattmachr, Esq. of Milbank, Tweed et al., New York,
New York. The EPCEC would like to thank
SunTrust Banks of
Florida, Inc. for sponsoring Mr. Blattmachr's presentation.

Informal
Meetings
On alternating
months (that is, each even month), the EPCEC offers informal “brown-bag” lunches.
These informal meetings, which are completely optional to attend,
occur at various locations. They are intended to facilitate
the exchange of information and the sharing of ideas and techniques
among the membership of the EPCEC. Topics include follow-up
commentary and questions on regular/formal meetings, discussions
about estate planning techniques, discussions on estate planning
articles or newsletters, and other practical topics. These
informal "brown-bag" lunches are intended to be very practical and
also a way for the membership to build their relationships.
